Duke the Australian Shepherd
I am in need of finding my wonderful male Aussie, "Duke," a new home; a new family to adopt him and love him as much as I do.
He's an excess white red tri with copper trim Australian Shepherd that weighs about 65 lbs and is approximately seven years old.
He has been my best friend for the past six years, since I rescued him from the SPCA in September of 2002.
He is a gregarious and smart Aussie (I don't have papers on him since he was a rescue) but, he definitely looks like an Aussie and acts the part. He has all of the typical traits of the breed -- he runs and stops, can twirl on a dime, knows hand commands and is neutered with all current shots.
It breaks my heart to have to find this super smart and sensitive dog a new home, but I got married and now have twin boys who are two years old, and they have both been diagnosed with Autism. Because Duke loves the indoors and we don't have other dogs to go outside and play with him, he relies on me for all of his love and attention, and I am simply not able to give him the one on one time that he needs. He loves to "herd" little tots like sheep -- but he's great with larger kids who know the breed -- and I bet he'd be a great herder on the farm (although he's never actually done this anywhere except for in our living room!).
Duke is super friendly, loves people and absolutely loves other dogs. He is house trained, but needs lots of interaction and can't be left outside alone in a yard -- he'd rather be inside most of the time if possible with you! I let him live indoors most always, because he just loved to be with me, sitting at my feet or nearby. He is a great protector, and hates to be alone. He would do best if there were at least one other dog he could chum around with, and because he was rescued, he has a fear of loud noises (firecrackers, gunshots, loud clicks), not sure why this is, but I've heard he's like most Aussies. He's a lead dog, loves walks but wants to get out in front of you if walked on a leash, so a strong arm is needed. I am a big walker, and like to go on trails and hikes, Duke loves it!
I'm going to miss him and really need to find him someone who understands his breed and will love him like I have. He deserves the best in his last half of his life, and if you live near Austin, I'd love to come visit him whenever you would invite me, and keep up with his life with photos of you and him happy as ever. If Duke sounds like the kind of dog you could invest your time and love into, please contact me at 512.587.4282 or email me at kellypeople@msn.com.
